Shock Absorbers & Suspension

Shock Absorbers & Suspension

You should change your car’s shock absorbers every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, but this can vary depending on driving conditions and how the vehicle is used. You should also have your shock absorbers inspected every 12,500 miles, or whenever you get your tyres, brakes or alignment checked. The primary purpose of shock absorbers is to prevent suspension movement.

Here are some signs that your shock absorbers may need to be replaced:

BUMPY RIDE

Worn shock absorbers can cause a bumpy ride. If you are experiencing bumpiness or shakiness while driving, it’s likely you shock absorbers are to blame.

STEERING PROBLEMS

One of the first signs people notice when their car needs new shock absorbers or struts is poor steering response. The steering wheel will often become stiff and hard to turn, and there may be unusual noises when turning the steering wheel. You may also find that your car sways or leans on turns or when changing from one lane to the other.

BRAKING ISSUES

When shock absorbers or struts are worn or damaged, the vehicle will often compensate in other ways. You may notice a “nose-diving” sensation as well as instability while braking. If you feel a lurch forward while braking, you’ll need to have your shock absorbers and struts checked out by a mechanic.

VISUALLY DAMAGED STRUTS AND SHOCK ABSORBERS

While often strut damage is better felt than seen, you might notice visibly dented or damaged struts or shock absorbers. In addition to this physical damage, fluid leaks among struts and shock absorbers are common when a car needs replacements. Mounts and bushings can also become corroded, damaged, or worn as time goes on.

UNEVEN TYRE WEAR

If the suspension isn’t absorbing road impacts properly, it can cause uneven weight distribution and abnormal tyre wear. Cupping, which is when the tyre tread develops scalloped or wavy dips, is a sign of worn shock absorbers.

OTHER ISSUES

Other signs include leaking shock absorbers, bad vibrations, longer stopping distances, swerving, nose diving, or a knocking noise.

Shock absorbers are a critical safety feature of your vehicle, as they help with steering, stopping, and stability. Replacing worn shock absorbers can restore your vehicle’s handling and ride control, and can also help reduce wear on other suspension components.
