Electrical

A car’s electrical system is made up of several components. The battery, alternator and starter work together in a cyclical way, so problems in any one component can affect the others. Regular maintenance is important to ensure the battery’s resting voltage and the alternator’s performance, which can help prevent electrical system issues.

BATTERY

The primary source of power for the car’s electrical systems, storing electrical energy and supplying 12 volts and 200–1000 amps to start the engine. The battery’s voltage needs to be checked to ensure it’s fully charged and functioning properly. A fully charged battery should have a voltage of around 12.6 volts. You can also visually inspect the battery for signs of wear, corrosion, or leaks. Ensure that the battery is firmly fixed in position.

ALTERNATOR

A secondary source of electrical current that generates electricity to recharge the battery and power electrical systems. The alternator’s output voltage should be tested with a multimeter while the engine is running. The voltage should be between 13.7 to 14.8 volts. If the voltage is too low or inconsistent, it may need to be repaired or replaced.

STARTER

A battery-powered motor that starts the engine. The starter circuit needs to be checked with a circuit tester, test lamp, or voltmeter.

WIRING

All wiring needs to be checked for signs of damage, corrosion or wear to prevent short circuits.

FUSES

Component of a car’s electrical system. Test each of the fuses.

SWITCHES & CONNECTORS

Electrically operated switches that manage components in the low-voltage system, such as headlights, fans and fuel pumps. Conduct routine maintenance on switches and connectors to ensure secure electrical connections.

GROUND CONNECTIONS

Use a multimeter to perform voltage drop tests on the ground connections. A high voltage drop indicates a poor ground.

Regular maintenance is key to ensuring your car’s electrical system operates reliably and prevents potential issues.
